The original Mini is an icon of British popular culture and were the forerunners of today’s ‘hot hatchbacks’, with its space-saving transverse engine and front-wheel-drive layout.

It was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis and manufactured at the Longbridge plant near Oxford, as well as other sites globally including, South Africa, South America and Australia.The Mini Mk I had three major UK updates – the Mark II, the Clubman, and the Mark III. Each of these came with a series of variations, including estate, pick-up truck and van models.

The performance versions of the car, the Mini Cooper and Cooper “S”, were successful race cars, winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965, and 1967. The Cooper S, produced between 1961 to 1971, is considered by most to be the “King of Minis”, and is still instantly recognizable anywhere in the world.
