Restoration Project of the Month: Mark’s TVR Chimaera 500 Revival

At Motaclan, we’re continually inspired by the determination and creativity within the classic car community. This month, we’re celebrating Mark Davies—whose five-year mission to rescue and revive a forgotten TVR Chimaera 500has turned a neglected shell into a head-turning road warrior.

From Forgotten to Fierce: Rescuing a TVR Chimaera 500

It was during a casual catch-up in lockdown that Mark stumbled across the Chimaera—tucked away under a cover in a friend’s workshop, where it had sat for over 11 years.

  • The heads were off

  • Bores full of water

  • Interior mouldy

  • Tyres flat

  • Bodywork tired

A true barn find—just without the barn. Although the Chimaera hadn’t been Mark’s first choice of classic, its pitiful state tugged at something deeper. The challenge sparked a passion—and a major project was born.

A Home Workshop Built for Revival

To take on the job, Mark converted his garage into a dedicated workshop, complete with a two-post lift. Once the tyres were aired and the car winched onto a recovery truck, the long road to restoration began.

Over the next five years—and while also breathing life into a few other TVRs—Mark methodically rebuilt the Chimaera from the chassis up.

Engine Rebirth with a Legendary Touch

The engine, having suffered years of neglect, was delivered to renowned TVR engine builder John Eales—who declared it the worst condition he’d ever seen.

Yet undeterred, John:

  • Saved the block and crank

  • Rebuilt the V8 into something truly special

Meanwhile, Mark:

  • Removed and restored the chassis

  • Welded on new outriggers

  • Hot zinc-coated the frame

  • Finished it all in a sparkling white powder coat for durability and flair

A Modernised Classic with Personal Touches

Mark’s Chimaera isn’t just restored—it’s reimagined. Thoughtful upgrades include:

  • Double DIN dashboard conversion with Apple CarPlay

  • Hardtop roof conversion by Steve Edwards

  • Tuscan seat swap for comfort and style

  • A fresh blue paint job—bright enough to stand out, but subtle enough to preserve historical accuracy

A Revival Fueled by Determination

What started as a pity project has turned into a passionate success. From an unwanted shell to a fully sorted, road-legal TVR, Mark’s Chimaera now commands attention—proof that no car is too far gone when matched with dedication and skill.

Why the TVR Chimaera Deserves the Spotlight

Built for speed and drama, the TVR Chimaera was a 1990s icon—marrying lightweight construction with big, brutish V8 performance. While often overshadowed by its more aggressive siblings, the Chimaera remains a true driver’s car.

Mark’s rebuild takes it even further, elevating the original with thoughtful updates and a serious dose of personality.
