Each month, we spotlight a remarkable classic car and the story behind its revival. For August 2025, we proudly present David Wise’s immaculate 1964 Austin Mini – a true testament to resilience, passion, and a father-son bond forged through restoration.
A Classic Born in the Swinging Sixties
David’s Austin Mini rolled off the production line in August 1964, dressed in Almond Green and equipped with an 850cc engine. First registered in London, it stood among the early icons of British motoring—compact, clever, and unmistakably cool.
By the time David discovered it at Santa Pod Raceway in 1996, it had already been upgraded. A 998cc engine, disc brakes, and 12” alloy wheels hinted at its potential. With his wife’s blessing, David made the purchase, though not without drama—the alternator failed on the A14 during the drive home.
Still, the Mini had found its new chapter.
From Fun Runabout to Forgotten Treasure
For several years, David’s Mini served as a lively weekend runner, bringing joy and memories. But in 2002, a slipping clutch and body deterioration sidelined it indefinitely. Parked outside and partially disassembled, it quietly declined—a classic in limbo.
By 2015, the situation was grim: engine and brakes had been borrowed, and the shell had seen better days. Many would have given up. But David saw something more—a legacy worth saving.
The Restoration Journey Begins
In late 2014, David and his son rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Over two and a half years, they completely transformed the car from a tired shell into a reborn classic.
His son tackled much of the bodywork, grinding, welding, prepping, and painting. Every weekend became a workshop, and every setback became a lesson.
By August 2017, the project reached completion. The Mini sailed through its MOT, stronger and sleeker than ever—a labor of love made real.
Performance Meets Personality: The Mini Today
The once Almond Green Mini now sports a modern Tweed Grey finish with a bold black roof—an elegant nod to its rebirth. But it’s not just cosmetic. This is a true resto-mod, built to drive and thrill.
Upgrades include:
-
Fully rebuilt bodyshell
-
Six-point roll cage
-
Custom interior retrim with MGF seats
-
Reconditioned front and rear subframes
-
Upgraded instrumentation

1275cc MG Metro engine, bored to 1293cc with sports cam, balanced crank, and uprated differential
This Mini is no longer just a vintage showpiece—it’s a street-ready performance classic.
Why This Mini Will Never Be Sold
When asked why he won’t ever sell the car, David says it best:
“Two and a half years of blood, sweat and tears went into its restoration, ably assisted by my son who did a lot of the bodywork. I’ve owned it too long to part with.”
It’s not about money. It’s about memories. This Mini is a rolling tribute to hard work, family, and personal history.
A Word of Advice to Fellow Enthusiasts
For those considering a classic restoration, David’s journey offers valuable wisdom:
-
Involve your family – shared builds create deeper meaning.
-
Be patient and precise – especially with rust, prep, and panel alignment.
-
Don’t cut corners – it pays off in MOT success and long-term pride.
-
Document the process – from teardown to rebuild, the photos and progress fuel motivation.
