The Triumph GT6 is a classic British sports coupe that was produced by Triumph Motor Company between 1966 and 1973. It was essentially a fastback version of the Triumph Spitfire, sharing many components with its smaller stablemate. The GT6 was designed to compete with other small sports coupes of its time.
The Triumph GT6 was introduced in 1966 as a two-seater sports coupe based on the chassis and mechanical components of the Triumph Spitfire. It featured a distinctive fastback design, penned by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti. The GT6 was initially equipped with a 1.6-liter inline-six engine, which was essentially a six-cylinder version of the Spitfire’s four-cylinder engine. This engine provided the GT6 with more power and better performance. Later models, including the Mk II and Mk III, received engine upgrades for improved performance.
The GT6 gained a reputation for its good handling and performance in its class. It participated in various motorsport events, including racing and rallying, where its nimble handling and relatively lightweight construction proved advantageous.
The Triumph GT6 faced challenges, including competition from other sports cars and changes in safety and emission regulations. Production of the GT6 ceased in 1973, marking the end of its model run.
