The Sprite made its debut in 1958 with a distinctive front-end design featuring bug-like, pop-up headlights, giving it the nickname “Bugeye” or “Frogeye.” It was powered by a 948cc A-Series engine.
The Mark II, introduced in 1961, featured a more conventional headlamp arrangement and a few other design changes. The engine size was increased to 1098cc.
The Mark III, also known as the Austin-Healey Sprite 1098, continued with the larger 1098cc engine. It had a more squared-off body design compared to its predecessors.
The Mark IV, also known as the Austin-Healey Sprite 1275, featured a more powerful 1275cc engine. It had a more modern appearance with a full-width grille and integrated bumpers.
Production of the Austin-Healey Sprite continued until 1971, with various updates and changes throughout its lifespan. The Sprite’s affordability, lightweight design, and fun-to-drive nature contributed to its popularity.
