March’s Restoration Project Winner: Nigel Phillips and His 1971 Triumph TR6
At Motaclan, we’re continually inspired by the dedication and passion of classic car restorers. Every build tells a unique story—of perseverance, meticulous attention to detail, and a deep appreciation for Britain’s motoring heritage.
Our March Restoration Project of the Month goes to Nigel Phillips, who spent a full decade transforming a 1971 Triumph TR6 from a derelict shell into a stunning, road-ready classic. This project is a true labour of love and a shining example of what makes the classic car community so special.
A Ground-Up Triumph TR6 Restoration: Passion Meets Precision
Nigel’s journey began in 1986 when he stumbled upon the TR6, abandoned in an outbuilding at his workplace. The car was in an advanced state of decay—missing its bonnet, boot, windscreen, interior, and even the engine head. The dashboard was snapped in two, and the engine had suffered severe water and snow damage.
However, hidden amongst the missing parts were two standout details: a SAH-stamped aluminium rocker cover—a nod to Triumph tuning legend Sidney Hurrell—and a rare set of Triple Weber 40 DCOE carburettors. These performance parts hinted at the car’s potential and gave Nigel the motivation he needed to begin the long journey of restoration.3.
Engineering Excellence: Rebuilding the Heart of a Classic
Nigel began with a full strip-down of the chassis and rolling gear. The entire frame was shot-blasted, repaired (including work on the differential mount), and protected using Crown corrosion coating, famously used on the Severn Bridge. He rebuilt the rear trailing arms with uprated springs and Koni shock absorbers, and completely overhauled the braking system, including new tubing, seals, discs, and drums.
The engine, initially sent to Nick Stagg Engineering, was later rebuilt by Nigel himself. The cracked head was replaced with a Janspeed Stage II head, suitable for unleaded fuel, and upgraded with a fast road cam, roller rockers, external oil feed, oil cooler, and high-flow oil filter. The engine was reassembled with a rebalanced crankshaft, new pistons, bearings, and gaskets, and the gearbox and overdrive were both fully refurbished and refitted.
A Complete Transformation: Inside and Out
The original bodyshell was beyond repair, so Nigel sourced a new heritage shell, finished in the car’s original Damson (Code 17) with a striking black rear panel. Once the body and chassis were reunited, Nigel installed all major components, including the exhaust, braking system, and of course, the iconic triple Weber carburettors.
Inside, the car was completely retrimmed with new carpets, trim panels, a refreshed dashboard, and an updated wiring loom. Nigel fitted later-model seats with headrests for added safety and comfort, while a brand-new hood was expertly installed by John Chatham, a respected figure in the classic car world.
Since the project’s completion in 1996, the TR6 has been lovingly maintained, covering just 20,000 dry-weather miles. It’s stored in a heated garage, regularly serviced by Nigel himself, and consistently MOT’d at the same trusted garage. It’s also insured with an agreed valuation via the KGM Classic Car scheme—a testament to the care and quality of this restoration.

Why the Triumph TR6 Still Turns Heads
The Triumph TR6 isn’t just a cherished classic—it’s a cornerstone of British sports car history. Produced from 1968 to 1976, the TR6 blended muscular styling with a robust six-cylinder engine, earning its place as one of the most beloved models in the TR series.
With its assertive stance, performance-focused design, and timeless silhouette, the TR6 remains a favourite among collectors and enthusiasts alike. Restoring one can be a labour-intensive journey—but, as Nigel’s project proves, the result is something truly special.
